The Rev. Dr. Archibald Charteris, 1885 to 1908, established the 'Guild' as he wanted the nation to recognise the work done by the ladies of the church. Two years after he brought the subject up at the 'General Assembly' the Guild was officially formed in May 1887, but the Guild in Banchory beat them, forming on 3rd November 1886.
The Banchory Ternan East Church Guild meets on the first Wednesday of the months or March, April, May, September, October, and November.

In Brief-The East Church Guild pre-dates the formation of The Church of Scotland Guild.
Here's a brief timeline:
1884 Dr Charteris makes appeal to women of the Church through 'Life and Work' magazine to find out more about women's work – such as that with the fisher women of Scotland
1885 Dr Charteris appeals to the Assembly for permission to investigate and report back on, the work being done by women and the possibility of organising and official working unit.
1887 Church of Scotland Woman's Guild was formed.
So Banchory-Ternan East Woman’s Guild was established on 3rd November 1886, six months prior to the General Assembly passing their deliverance in May 1887.
Rev. George Hutchison, that year's Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland was the first president.
Today it is simply known simply as “The Guild”,
The Guild contributes in many and varied ways too the life and work of our congregation and to the wider church.
The Guild has raised over £500,000 since 1997 for a wide variety of projects.
